In 1996, drug and alcohol use by grade six to 12 students were assessed by the University of Maine. Among the most notable results of their research was that 60 percent of the respondents from the seventh grade, 70 percent of the respondents from the eighth grade, 78 percent of the respondents from the ninth grade and 86 percent of the respondents from the tenth grade had used alcohol.
